This catalogue, the manufacturers stressed, was a limited edition, issued as a companion to to the large reference list, not to supersede it. Allen & Hanburys were founded in London in the early 18th century by Silvanus Bevan, a Welshman, apothecary and a Quaker. The company became well known as a respected pharmaceutical manufacturer; their factory in Bethnal Green, although carrying much of the administrative and scientific side of the business, also produced surgical instuments, the subject of this catalogue.
