This was the 15th book published by Mrs Molesworth, appearing some 12 years after 'The Cuckoo Clock'. It contains 5 stories, each about 50 pages long, and would have entertained both boys and girls of the time. Mary Louisa Molesworth, née Stewart (18391921) was an English writer of children's stories, and also wrote novels, for adult readers, under the pseudonym of Ennis Graham. Her name occasionally appears in print as M. L. S. Molesworth. The children's books typified late Victorian writing for girls. Aimed at girls too old for fairies and princesses but too young for Austen and the Brontës, books by Molesworth had their share of amusement, but they also had a good deal of moral instruction. Girls reading Molesworth would grow up to be mothers; thus, the books emphasized Victorian notions of duty and self-sacrifice. Perhaps her best-known tale is 'The Cuckoo Clock', along with 'Tell me a Story' and 'The Carved Lions'. Our book is in good general condition, bound in the original d
