"I decided to go for a hand-made approach when creating illustrations for the book using mostly ink and watercolour. I found that working in this way has allowed me to use water to create the atmosphere I thought was necessary for a story set in stormy weather conditions. The citizens of the town begin to feel powerless and are increasingly at the mercy of the elements. To evoke this feeling, I found an experimental approach was necessary. In some cases I allowed the water to be in control of the piece; having drawn the basic elements, the water could bleed and wash the ink away as the people are subjected to increasingly severe conditions.
