Simple Rules for Painting in Oilsby A. P. Laurie. Winsor and Newton Limited, 1955. Paperback, 45 pp. Either linseed or poppy oil has discoloured a few pages towards the back of this book (one might have been able to identify which one many decades ago, but now no smell remains), and theres a similar small stain on the top right hand of the cover. Condition: Poor Now something of a classic, this little pamphlet was presumably included in a box of Winsor and Newton oil paints that was sold to an aspirant painter in the mid 1950s. It contains much useful technical information, explained in very simple terms, about the oil paints then available. Presumably the chemistry, as well as the range of colours available, has moved on considerably since the middle of the last century; but here, as if preserved in aspic, is what painters had access to in our parentsor grandparentstime.
