A personal letter describing a winter voyage to the far North of Norway for iron ore or a journey many miles up the Plate River for grain, brings with it an air of authenticity and glamour that few textbook descriptions can equal. In 1936 the British Ship Adoption Society started arranging correspondences between schools and merchant ships: now, under the Society's auspices, over a thousand ships are exchanging letters with 850 schools, whilst almost everyday members of ships' personnel are visiting schools, and teachers and pupils are going aboard their adopted ships. This book is a compilation of some of these letters written from all parts of the world to schools in Britain by captains and radio-operators, stewards and engineers. In them, ports that hitherto were mere names on a map became vividly alive and remote corners of the earth exciting and real. There is a prize sticker on inside cover. Generally good condition, though d/j has tears and small missing pieces.
