Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) was a renowned British diarist, former Member of Parliament (MP), and is also credited as the father of the modern Royal Navy. In this book from 1841, Rev. John Smith has collected most of Pepys' letters and journal entries. In addition, for the first time, Pepys' diaries from his voyage to Tangier, Morocco were published here. Of course, Pepys is also known for his documenting of The Plague in 1665 and the Great Fire of London in 1666, and this is all captured within the book. The personal insights provided here not only paint a picture of Pepys himself, but also gives the reader a fascinating sociohistorical piece. This is Volume One only - unfortunately, we do not have the second volume to complete the set at this time. Book is in remarkable condition considering its age, but does show some signs of wear. Some wear to cover and spine, pages are lightly tanned/foxed with crinkled edges, plus previous owner's inscription at front. Please see photographs.
