Purnell's Illustrated Encyclopedia of modern Weapons and Warfare is a partwork originating with Purnell in 19671969, republished under the Phoebus brand in the late 1970s. Its contributors included Bill Gunston OBE, Ian V. Hogg and illustrations by John Batchelor MBE. The quality of these lead contributors ensured high quality and accuracy in the finished product. From the A1 (first of the British A-class submarines) to the Zulu (NATO name for the Soviet Navy's Project 611 attack submarine), these magazines cover the weapons and systems used around the world in the twentieth century to the date of publication, in alphabetical order across 125 volumes (plus 3 volumes as an index). Levels of detail for articles vary from a short paragraph, to several pages of technical and operational analysis.
