These two novels were respectively the first and the last of MacDonald's series of 'fantasy' works, 'Phantastes' being published in 1858, and 'Lilith' in 1896. C S Lewis was a fan (and provided the introduction to this book), while the poet W H Auden wrote that "Lilith is equal if not superior to the best of (Edgar Allan) Poe". George MacDonald (18241905) was a Scottish author, poet & Christian Congregational minister, and became a pioneering figure in the field of modern fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow-writer Lewis Carroll. In addition to his fairy tales, MacDonald wrote several works of Christian theology, including several collections of sermons. Our book is in excellent 'as new' condition, the only defects being a small smudge at the foot of the front fep, the price on the jacket obscured in black biro, and some tiny brown spots on the top edge of the textblock (not foxing).
