Joe Murphy first became interested in the history of New Earswick when he began delivering mail to the residents in 1976. Over the ensuing decade, he built up a comprehensive collection of photographs and stories, some dating back to the earliest years of this unique Yorkshire village which was founded by the eminent Quaker philanthropist, Joseph Rowntree, in 1904 The book contains 96 selected photographs from Mr Murphy's collection, together with a series of memories recorded by him on conversation with longstanding residents of the village. The result, a fascinating sequence of vignettes from the development of a unique experiment in community housing, will be of interest not only to all who know New Earswick, but to students of social history everywhere. Slight indentations on front cover possibly from resting on it to write, and remains of a sticky label on the fly leaf but otherwise very good condition.
