The author, a south Indian who worked for All India Radio and had a remarkable musical gift, came to England in 1953 to work as a freelance broadcaster. He joined the Philharmonia Chorus when it was first formed and was soon on its committee. He thus came into contact with Walter Legge, who recognised his skills as both a musician and as an administrator, and who brought him into EMI.
