In the series of 'Great Books of the Western World'. Written by a man who was brought up speaking Latin, in France, in the sixteenth century and the French Renaissance, the man who established essay writing as a genre, and who was read at least in part by Shakespeare. Montaigne draws upon his own experience to philosophize, sometimes dipping into what is now seen as fantastical. He is is spirited and engaging author. The book is in very good condition; little evidence of shelf wear, sound binding, gilt edging to the top page edges, just a mild sprinkling of pinhead foxing on the other edges and with pages that look barely read.
