Michele Sanmicheli was an Italian architect and urban planner, and a citizen of the Republic of Venice. After completing his education in Rome he returned to Verona, where he received numerous prestigious commissions throughout his life. Hired as a military architect by the Venetian republic, he designed numerous fortifications in Venice, Verona, Bergamo, and Brescia, and he also worked extensively in Dalmatia, in Zadar andibenik, Crete, and Corfu, these latter locations meaning he was probably the only 16th century Italian architect to have had the opportunity to see and study Greek architecture, a possible source of inspiration for his use of Doric columns without bases. As well as his military works, he was also involved in the design of palaces and religious architecture of great value.
