Make-Believe (SIGNED FIRST EDITION) H. D. (Henry Dawson) Lowry was an English journalist, short story writer, novelist and poet, born at Truro, educated at Queen's College, Taunton, and then at the University of Oxford, gaining a B.A. in chemistry in 1891. That year Lowry's Cornish stories were accepted for publication in the National Observer and a number of his subsequent novels focussed on life in Cornwall. The numerous illustrations in this book are by Charles Robinson. Robinson served an apprenticeship as a printer and took art lessons in the evenings. He won a place at the Royal Academy in 1892 but was unable to take it up due to lack of finances. (The first full book illustrated by him was Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses (1895) which includes over 100 pen and ink drawings. It was extremely popular, going through many reprints, and generated numerous commissions.) He illustrated many fairy tales and children's books throughout his career. This book of Lowry
