First edition (1950) hardback of this second novel by Chester Himes (1909-1984) who is perhaps better known for his Harlem detective series of novels "A classic of African-American fiction, Chester Himes's tale of a young black man who becomes a union organizer during WWII examines major problems in American racism, anti-Semitism, labor strife, and corruption." (Goodreads) Pictorial dustjacket, unclipped, but worn at the edges and stained or discoloured both back and front. Black cloth cover , bumped at corners and slightly faded. Endpapers show some foxing but internally the pages are clean apart from the edges which are slightly discoloured or stained
