London Transport Posters - Harold F Hutchison (introduction and notes). Published by the London Transport Board, Hardback with dust jacket, 1963. This book re-enacts some 50 years of poster art. The 124, mostly full-colour plates reflect with a particular directness the development of both the poster itself and a tradition in quality set firmly on course by Frank Pick, chief executive officer and vice-chairman of the London Passenger Transport Board from its creation in 1933 until 1940. This is public art, produced for the street rather than the gallery. Also found inside: a small booklet of London Transport posters, which were available to order as prints or postcards; with black-and-white 'thumbnail' pictures inside. One of the posters was designed by Graham Sutherland, one of whose paintings hang in Chichester Cathedral. The format of the book is, firstly, a foreword and instiduction, then the plates, one per page, with artist's name, poster title and year made. Condition. Book
