Stephen Toulmin. Knowing and Action. An Invitation to Philosophy. Macmillan, 1976. Pb. Good - cond. Sound and no markings, but top of paper covers frayed and browned along the edges and at the end papers. Text is fine. No Ill. Preface by the author and in 5 parts. 310 pp. The title perhaps indicates this to be an Introductory book for beginners, but that would be misleading as Toulmin is a challenging philosopher. Born in England he had lived in America for some years before writing this work. His interests lay in the field of Ethics and Philosophy of Science but he made his name as a follower of Wittgenstein particularly in the methods of argument which he developed. The 5 Parts, which are divided into 19 chapters in all, are entitled:- 1. introduction: What are we to make of ourselves. 2. The Philosopher as Geometer. 3. The Philosopher as Anthropologist. 4. The Philosopher as Critic. 5. Conclusion: On knowing our own minds. This copy £12.99
