Short Foreword and Historical Note at the back. 272 pp. Awqarded the prestigious Carnegie Medal for 1954 this, though a reprint is a nicely produced volume at a vintage period for OUP children's books. The author, who reached the rank of Major in the 2nd World War, went on to write many historical stories for children with as his hero, whatever the period, a member of the Carey family. There were 13 books in the is series.This is the first and best known volume and gives the reader a picture of what it was like to be young knight in the Holy Land waging war against Saladin. A stirring story well-researched which wears its years lightly. This
