John Richardson died in early 2019 when this book was almost ready for publication. He was perhaps best known for his biographies of Picasso - there is rumour that another edition of the series fo biographies was ready for print before he died. His working life brought him into contact with many of the 20th Century's shining artistic lights and enabled him to amass an enviable collection of art. This book reveals some of the interiors of the houses in which he lived; from the Château de Castille in the South of France where he lived with his partner Douglas Cooper, to rooms in the Alabany on Piccadilly and a country retreat in Connecticut. Richardson describes his life in these various location and how he decorated them; of the state of his Connecticut house when he moved in he says "my predecessor's only lapse had been to paint the living room a rather shrill yellow, with curtains and upholstery to match.
