The book was "originally written for the purpose of elucidating and justifying a map, drawn on a large scale and exhibiting in the fullest manner the authentic details of that portion of Africa, which lies between the equator and the southern tropic", and contains a large fold-out copy of that map at the end (see photo) Brown cloth hard cover, slightly faded and slightly rubbed at the corners. Spine firm and pages all securely attached. Some tanning along the hinges between the covers and the free endpapers , and slight foxing along the outside edges of the pages, but the pages are all clean and unmarked, as are the fold-out maps.
