Peter Hall's book, 'In the Web' brings to light the mysteries that lay behind his family and the other Hong Kong Eurasian families intertwined with it. Because it attempts to lift the stone firmly left in place for over a century, this work will not be welcomed by those who prefer conjecture to be left to outsiders. This is a personal account which encompasses many long years of painstaking research - often for documentary evidence which isn't there. Yet this family story shows how they saw the development and growth of Hong Kong, and draws in many related families who helped to shape it into the dynamic place it is today. This is also an epitaph to a unique community. Peter writes vividly about his own experiences in a Japanese internment camp in war time Hong Kong, his later education in Sydney and Liverpool, and working for Hongkong Land.
