This large volume on Ilya Repin, 1844-1930, published in 1985, is an excellent example of Aurora Art publishers output. Subsequently many of the books produced by this Leningrad publisher were made more widely available through Parkstone Press. . .After the Russian Revolution Repin was held up as a model for the school of Socialist Realism. He joined the Peredvizhniki, Group [the Itinerants] in 1878 rebelling against the stultifying nature of the formal academy and insisting that art should reflect real life. He was particularly famous for complex works illustrating key events in Russian history and for portraits that are notable for their psychological depth.
