This British monthly magazine for women was founded in January 1894 by Sir Arthur Pearson, with the aim of dominating the penny magazine market. Competitors were the Amalgamated Press' "Home Chat" and "Woman's Life". The magazine ran until 1958 when it was taken over by sister title "Womans Own". It was published as a small format magazine which was initially issued weekly, but later changed to monthly. The formulation was to cover society gossip and domestic tips along with short stories, dress patterns, recipes and competitions. Ours is the 'New Year Number' for 1899, a remarkable survivor offering a wonderful portrait of social and family life at the turn of the 19th/20th century. It is in excellent condition - a little browned generally with age, but intact and, apart from the outer cover which is now detached, firmly bound. Also included is the free Dressmaking Supplement. A very rare item.
