A gentle and absorbing tale of an American family's summer spent in England. Told through the eyes of a young teenager, Mary Lee Wade, there are lots of pony rides, family fun and even a ghost attached to the Randalls old farmhouse in Somerset. Decie Merwin was an American children's book author and illustrator. Born Emma Martine Merwin in 1894, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, she was nicknamed 'Decie' by her family, after a young nephew mispronounced her name. Her family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in the early 1900s, and she was educated at the Knoxville High School. She later studied at the New School of Design in Boston. Merwin moved to New York in 1925, and began working as a book illustrator. In 1934 she married author Jack Bechdolt, with whom she wrote Dulcie and Her Donkey (1944). She traveled briefly to England, where she set her horse story, Somehaze Farm, which was published in the UK as Holiday Summer. She lived for many years in New York, and died in 1961.
