Fungi Collected in Shropshire and Other Neighbourhoods This book is a copy of some of the plates from 3 notebooks by M. F. Lewis. She was a woman who dedicated decades of her life to the study of fungi in the verdant and rain-soaked habitats of England and Wales between 1860 and 1902. Her watercolour illustrated notebooks titled Fungi Collected in Shropshire and Other Neighbourhoods were forgotten for a century. Her sensitive and scientifically accurate illustrations reveal a life of patient and meticulous observation. As mycology gains global attention and attracts more funding it is important to acknowledge and celebrate the work of those who have already done the work, many of them overlooked because of their sex, class, or nationality. There is an obvious interest for us in the Shropshire locations that M. F. Lewis notes in her work; Ludlow crops up repeatedly as do surrounding villages such as Downton, Whitcliff and Bitterley. The notebooks are now owned by Cornell University Libr
