One of the greatest Alpine painters of all time was Edward Theodore Compton (1849 - 1921), an Englishman by birth who lived permanently in Feldafing on Lake Starnberg. He initially became known and popular as a mountaineer and illustrator of alpine books and magazines in the sphere of influence of alpine clubs. Accordingly, he was judged as an artist almost exclusively on the basis of his immense work as an illustrator and less on the basis of his overall work. In this, magnificent landscape paintings, which Compton created free from the constraints of illustration, occupy an important place. Ernst Bernt deserves credit for having pointed this out and for the need to compile a list of E.T. Compton's works.
