A collection of original WW2 letters written to a serving ack ack gummer by his ATS fiancée, his mother and other members of his extended family. Ray met his fiancée Kathleen (Kay) when they were serving in an anti-aircraft battery and searchlight battery respectively. They were posted all over South East England and kept in touch by mail. Over 100 of the letters survive and cover the period of the couples courtship, marriage, the birth of their first child, Rays inclusion in the British Army on the Rhine and his eventual demobilisation at the beginning of 1946. The book also includes a wealth of background information explaining the various allusions within the correspondence, such as the duties of the ATS, home-made remedies, the difficulties of travel as bombing disrupted transport, the call up of older women, rationing, etc. Humorous material includes, for example,a contemporary poem about soap rationing and how to make smog!
