Grow, Cook, Nourish - Darina Allen Darina Allen is the founder of Ballymaloe Cookery School - the west Ireland culinary institution which has its own kitchen gardens. Grow, cook, nourish is a book that combines the kitchen garden (or allotment, or spare garden patch) with a cook book. It houses a massive 500 recipes divided into categories: vegetables, fruit, herbs, wild & foraged and edible flowers. Prime ingredients are introduced with notes about their cultivation and . . . in the event of a bumber crop what to do with a glut . . . before a number of recipes for that key ingredient. The vegetable section contains recipes for cauliflower and carrots but also for more unusual vegetables such as oca and agretti, whereas the fruit section has recipes such as roast plums with mozzarella and mint, loganberry and hazelnut meringue and redcurrant soda. Disclosure . . . it's a hefty book so could double up as an exercise weight.
