A rare second edition published 1818 by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown. Hardback. Quarterbound in red calfskin. Raised gilt bands on the spine. Marbled boards. Gilt lettering on black title plate on upper spine.. Spine is slightly faded but lettering is still bright. Inside pages have tanned very slightly. There are a few (foxing) blemishes on the endpapers. Binding is secure. Overall, the condition of this book is good. Contains 20 colour plates which are still remarkably bright, given the age of this book. The object of this book is to "enable children and young persons to acquire a knowledge of the vegetable productions of their native country, by introducing to them...the principles of Linnaean System of Botany." It is published anonymously but is known to be produced by the Fitton sisters, Elizabeth & Sarah Mary. The book is credited with popularising botany amongst women in the Nineteenth Century.
