Clerihews are four-line humorousbiographicalpoems made famous by Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956), who publishedBiography for Beginnerswith illustrations by G K Chesterton in 1905 and was also known for his detective fiction. The authors of some of the 26 clerihews in this booklet are named and include Nicolas Bentley, William Le Fanu, Compton Mackenzie, and C K Scott Moncrieff. Other poems are anonymous. Edited by John Carter and published by the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge. First edition, 1938. The Rampant Lions Press was a fine letterpress printing firm that operated from 1924 to 2008. It remained a private press until 1949. This booklet will probably be of interest more for its form as a relatively early example of Rampant Lions work than for its contents. Slim 40-page booklet in stiff black card covers, with pages in a variety of colours. Sewn binding. Cover has a 2 cm tear at the spine, and there is some discoloration to the edges of pages.
