The modern iterations of Chinese wallpaper by the likes of Fromental and de Gournay are, in large, versions of the handpainted papers that were hung in grand houses across Britain and Ireland from the mid-eighteenth century onwards. When they were first hung the colours would have been much more vibrant than the faded versions that still exist and the craftsmanship would have been as extraordinary then as it still seems today. Emile de Bruijn's survey of the wallpapers includes those at Houghton Hall, Shenfold Park, Erdigg and Nostell Priory. He charts the rise in the taste for these papers and how the papers themselves change according to different ideas of design and taste. Measurements: 23cm x 28cm x 2.5cm
