Really a book of photographs with captions and a linking narrative and telling the story of the Chinese community in this great mid-west city. which commenced in 1857 with young Alla Lee coming East to St Louis from St Francisco. He was followed by his fellow countrymen who established a community in an area of the city known as Hop Alley which became the local Chinatown. This was demolished in the 1960s, but the Chinese community continued to flourish. The author is Professor of History at Truman State University and has written several books on the Chinese Americans and their history. The images chosen convey the struggle and success of the Chinese Americans in the last 150 years. T
