This is the story of the man who saved Japanese cherry blossom, an unknown Englishman called Collingwood Ingram. As a young man he travelled to Japan and witnessed the displays of cherry blossom or sakura. On a return visit in 1926 he witnessed the dominance of a clones cherry variety that was sweeping the landscape and being used as a symbol of the country's expansionist ambitions. Ingram recognised the importance of the diversity of cherry trees and determined to send rare varieties from his own garden in England back to Japan to maintain this diversity through a network of 'cherry guardians'. Naoko Abe is a Japanese journalist and non-fiction writer who has lived in London since 2001. First published in Japanese in 2016 this title has just been translated for English language readers.
