This is a beautiful, subscribers 1st folio edition, c. 1890, of a set of pamphlets, originally issued in six parts, each part with three engraved plates by Frederick Barnard and 16 large pages of text with wood engraved illustrations by various other artists. The Barnard plates are reproduced in photogravure (a lithographic method) on thin, India paper which is mounted onto thick card, each with a commentary on the facing page. Barnard was commissioned to do the illustrations originally for the Household Edition of Dickens in about 1871. A hardback, half leather-, half cloth-bound volume with gilt page edging, gilt, tooled pattern and title on spine, gilt, tooled image on front and marbled end pages. The binding is a little loose and the leather part of the binding would benefit from some restoration work, as the dye is coming off and there is some damage to the spine.
