First edition, retold by Ella Young (1867-1956, Irish-born mystic, poet, and mythographer), illustrated and decorated by Edith Maud Gonne (1866-1953, fellow mystic and one of the boldest figures of the Irish Literary Revival). An 8vo hardback in original blue cloth with white lettering and Celtic swan motif to front, which are partially rubbed away. Long patch of brown foxing to left of the front cover along its fore-edge, spine toned and significant loss to white lettering, both ends of spine rubbed, touch of wear to corner, and a 1cm tear appears to top-edge of the last page as well as the rear end-paper which is slightly foxed. Previous owners' inscriptions to ffep; with 4 (including frontispiece) tipped-in colour plates mounted on brown card, though the frontispiece is detaches and so is its tipped-in plate. Beautiful head- and tailpieces for every story, also a few decorative opening initials, all by Maud Gonne. A scarce and handsome copy.
