This edition published 1872 is Vol 2 of a three volume series 'Observations on the Popular Antiquities of Great Britain'. The author John Brand's intention is to document the 'the origin of our vulgar and provincial customs, ceremonies and superstitions' e.g. there are substantial essays on sorcery and witchcraft, ghosts and apparitions, omens, divinations at weddings, the nuptial kiss in the church, death bed superstitions, bees informed of death, bear-baiting, physical charms etc. There is some discolouration of pages, a little wear and tear on the spine, corners somewhat dog-eared and some pp uncut. Endpapers consist of list of 'Bohn's Various Libraries' A fascinating, and clearly exhaustively researched book.
