Ten volume edition of this classic biography, initially published as eight volumes but with two additional volumes of 'Johnsonia'. Each book is bound brown/purple cloth with blind stamped boards and gilt lettering to the spine. Each frontispiece has a pair of engravings by E. Finden from drawings by C. Stanfield R.A. The overall condition of the set is Fair, with foxing to all endpapers, bumping to all corners and sunning to spine and boards. Although some volumes have poor aspects (see conditions listed below), the pages themselves are essentially clean. Samuel Johnson, often referred to as Dr. Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and committed Tory, and is described by the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history" (wikipedia).
