Between the Lines – Saul Steinberg A few years ago I saw a great exhibition of Steinberg works at Dulwich Picture Gallery I picked up a great Saul Steinberg image on a postcard from that exhbition that has remained positioned on various ledges, or taped to a wall, or as a favourite bookmark ever since. That image was one of his whimsical drawings of a bathing woman, drawn on the actual bath. This volume brings together more than eighty works by the artist in a variety of media, from collage to drawings, to objects and photographs and also contains images from the same series as the woman in the bath. The book is structured around three essays that explore the artist’s use of symbols, his fascination with fakery and imitation, his musings on identity through the theme of the mask, and the autobiographical nature of his work.
