First published in the periodical At Random (1929),  “Rats” may well be the last of M.R. James scariest stories. It takes place—as many of his best stories do—in an inn near the coast where Thomson, currently at Cambridge, has retired for a little quiet reading.  Everything happened in the city of Suffolk.
