I got a tip from a like-minded person about where I can see and take photos of great loons. Went to the lake, not really knowing where it usually goes. Once there, I sat up on a mountain with a view of large parts of the lake except for a few bays. Sat and watched for an hour without seeing them. So I climbed down, walked a bit, climbed over a small ridge and came down to one of the bays. I sat down and continued watching. After an hour or so, a large loon suddenly appears in front of me, straight out about 20 meters away. I raise the camera, take a picture, it sees me, dives and is gone. I sit still, scouting and scouting, eventually seeing them - on the OTHER side the bay about 150 meters away. I note that there are lake plots on that side, but also see that right where the pockets seem to be, there is a small boat dock without a locked gate.
