Hoagland Howard Carmichael received his LL.D. from Indiana University in 1926, and at the same time was involved in the new music evolving in New Orleans and Chicago, the hot jazz of Louis Armstrong and Hoagy's close friend Bix Beiderbecke, to whom he devotes many pages of this book.
