Edith Forbes (1843-1925), of the Boston Forbes family (that includes Senator John Forbes Kerry), made a western excursion with Thayer's father, James Bradley Thayer (1831-1902), Ralph Waldo Emerson and others in April-May 1871 in conjunction with a lecture tour by Emerson. Forbes's brother was James Murray Forbes (1845-1937), who lived at 107 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston (Massachusetts Historical Society Web site).
