With the initials 'E.R.T.' on the half-title. Thayer graduated Harvard Law in 1888; perhaps this was a gift from his father's friend. Weir River Farm, Hingham, Massachusetts embossed stamp on flyleaf. Edith Forbes (1843-1925), of the Boston Forbes family (that includes Senator John Forbes Kerry), made a western excursion with Thayer's father, James Bradley Thayer (1831-1902), Ralph Waldo Emerson and others in April-May 1871 in conjunction with a lecture tour by Emerson. Forbes's brother was James Murray Forbes (1845-1937), who lived at 107 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston (Massachusetts Historical Society Web site). Ezra Thayer, Dean of Harvard Law from 1910-1915, suffered a nervous breakdown and was found dead in the Charles River Basin on Sept. 16, 1915 -- not far from his home at 77 Bay State Road -- two days after he h
