Authorized by the National Trust and the Churchill Family in 1984, this is a hand-painted replica of the original 1942 Frank Salisbury portrait of Winston Churchill that hangs above the fireplace mantel in Churchill's Library at Chartwell. These paintings were individually painted by commission and then magnificently framed in very limited quantities.Francis Owen Salisbury (1874-1962) was an English artist who specialized in portraits and large canvases of historical and ceremonial events. He also worked in stained glass and book illustration. In his heyday he made a fortune on both sides of the Atlantic and was known as "Britain's Painter Laureate." His portrait of Winston Churchill was the only painting that Churchill sat for during the war. Salisbury ultimately painted several versions of this portrait. One, commissioned by Churchill's ex-son-in-law, Duncan Sandys, sold at auction at Christie's in 1997 for 111,500 British pounds sterling.
