An attractive collection of text and plates from Antoine Seilern's collection at 56 Princes Gate, South Kensington, London. With 275 in-text illustrations and 279 separate plates. Count Antoine Seilern (1901-1978) was an Anglo-Austrian art collector and art historian. During his lifetime he was a respected scholar and an important art collector. It was following his grandmother's death that Seilern devoted himself to collecting thanks to a large inheritance. He took private lessons with Hungarian art historian Johannes Wilde in order to adequately understand new acquisitions. Following the end of the Second World War Seilern returned to his London house of 56 Princes Gate. Here he displayed his great works of art, never opening the blinds or installing electric lights for fear of distorting the colours. He studied his collections in earnest and gained many masterpieces including Rubens, Cézanne, and Degas. He would lend to the British Museum and occasionally make anonymous donations to
