Hand made folding "lift the flap" Union Jack, manuscript explanatory text, 115 x 80 mm. when folded. A clever moveable showing the development of the flag, together with directions to show the two iterations: the original Union flag ordered in 1606 with the cross of St. George over the saltire of St. Andrew; followed by the present day Union Jack (after the legislative union with Ireland in 1801) with the cross of St. Patrick over the saltire, with the cross of St. George over the top of both. No similar printed version is traced in library catalogues, although we have previously had a printed version published in Liverpool for the Mercantile Marine Service Association; this would appear to be a manuscript and hand made version of that item, though whether this precedes that edition, or is a copy we have been unable to ascertain.
