Portrait of Gaston, Duke of Orléans (1608-1660); half-length, turned to the right, wearing armour and collar; a battle in the background; within an octagonal frame.Gaston, the third son of Henri IV by Marie de' Medici, younger brother of Louis XIII, often plotted against his mother, brother and Cardinal Richelieu. In 1626, he was created Duke of Orleans and Chartres on his marriage to Marie, Duchess of Montpensier; she died a year later after the birth of their daughter Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchesse de Montpensier, "La Grande Mademoiselle". In 1632 married Marguerite de Lorraine. In 1643 became Lieutenant General of France; from 1646 he became Duc d'Alençon.
